Walnut is hard, dense, tight-grained and polishes to a very smooth finish. Because of its color, hardness, and grain it is a popular furniture choice.
- Color – Heartwood ranges from a deep, rich dark brown to a purplish black. Sapwood is nearly white to tan.
- Grain – Mostly straight and open but some boards have burled or curly grain.
- Characteristics – Moderately dense, very strong with good shock resistance. Excellent machining qualities.
- Finishing – Takes to finishing very well and easily. Naturally stain resistant because of the oil in the wood.
